  • You are encouraged to have a driver to take you home after your ortho-biologic procedure.
    You may be prescribed an anti-anxiety medication
    If you take anti-anxiety medication, you MUST have a driver.
  • You may eat or drink the night before and the day of the procedure, only local anesthetic is used.
  • STOP statin cholesterol lowering drugs 1 month prior to procedure.

    Some statin drugs are:

  • Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
  • Fluvastatin (Lescol)
  • Lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor)
  • Pravastatin (Pravachol)
  • Pitavastatin (Livalo)
  • Simvastatin (Zocor)
  • Rosuvastatin (Crestor)

STOP all anti-inflammatory medications and supplements one week prior to the scheduled procedure. Do not take anti-inflammatory medications and supplements for at least one week following the procedure.

    Anti-inflammatory medications include:

  • STOP NSAIDs
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Aspirin (except if baby aspirin for the heart)
  • Naproxen (Aleve)
  • Celebrex
  • Meloxicam (Mobic)
  • Indomethacin
  • STOP Fish oils
  • STOP Turmeric
  • STOP Ginger

Do not take oral or injectable steroids, corticosteroids, or gluco-corticosteroids for 3 weeks prior to procedure and discontinue use for 3 weeks after the procedure.

STOP Glucocorticoids:

  • Hydrocortisone (Cortef)
  • Cortisone
  • Ethamethasoneb (Celestone)
  • Prednisone (Prednisone Intensol, Medrol-DosePak)
  • Prednisolone (Orapred, Prelone)
  • Triamcinolone (Aristospan Intra-Articular, Aristospan Intralesional, Kenalog) Methylprednisolone (Medrol, Depo-Medrol, Solu-Medrol)
  • Dexamethasone (Dexamethasone Intensol, DexPak 10 Day, DexPak 13 Day, DexPak 6 Day)

Quinolone antibiotics like Cipro (cipofloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin), gatifloxacin, ofloxacin, etc. are known to predispose to tendonitis, tendinopathy, and tendon rupture, especially in older patients who combine with corticosteroids. If you have a known diagnosis of tendon problems or anticipate getting cell or ortho-biologic treatment, do not take quinolone antibiotics.

  • Prior to your procedure, you may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain relief needs.
  • If you are a current smoker, we encourage you to quit or cut down on smoking.
    Smoking can delay the healing response and decrease the effectiveness of the procedure.
  • Cut down or eliminate alcohol both before and after the procedure.
  • Make sure that you are getting plenty of rest/sleep. Seven to Nine hours of sleep per night is essential for body healing. Diet, exercise, and proper supplements are encouraged both prior to and following the ortho-biologics procedure.

Exercise-It is important to strengthen the muscle tone surrounding the joint to be treated with cell or ortho-biologic therapies because, there will be a period of rest after the procedure and with rest, muscles atrophy, even after only 1 week.

  • Dieting: limit or eliminate added sugar and processed foods.
    Emphasize lean meats, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid bread, pasta, and grains.

    • Intermittent fasting induces cellular repair and removes waste material from cells.
      Participating in a fasting diet has been shown to shift stem cells from a dormant state to a state of self-regeneration.
